Petfinder.com has an article/video on their home page about this topic. Apparently July 4th is the WORST day of the year for pets running away from home.

Permalink Reply by Diane Weissert on July 1, 2012 at 10:49pm I have already seen several posts on Craigslist and Facebook about a lost dog who got spooked by fireworks and bolted and it's not even the 4th yet!! This holiday has proven to be the busiest for shelters around the country. I have volunteered at several shelters and it is truly amazing the number of intakes there are in the weeks following the 4th of July. PLEASE urge all of your friends, family and neighbors to keep their pets INSIDE once the sun goes down and the fireworks have started and NOT to take their pets with them to watch fireworks. Even if a dog is on a leash, if scared enough they can and will bolt. Small dogs can easily wiggle out of their harnesses as well.

Thanks, Diane! I hope the word is getting out to the public!!
