Gwennie Pollaro's poisoning from pet food

Since Cleopatra's passing,  Gwennie cat has been very very ill.  At first it was not so noticable but she was getting thinner, spitting up what I thought was hairballs but I noticed blood.  I took her to see Dr. Butler then end of March and all through April and she kept  losing weight with first coccidiosis which he treated...and vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea. It was frightening. She had lost weight like 1 1/2…

GROOMING TIP #10 FOR THE DO-IT-YOURSELF TYPE: SHEDDING FOR MEDIUM HAIRED DOGS

A lot of prospective dog owners, when considering the breed they choose, assume that the longer the hair, the more shedding they will have in the house and on the furniture.  Actually among the heaviest shedders are the medium haired, double coated dogs such as…

Lost and Found Pets from Tuesday's Tornado Outbreak

After watching the live footage of the tornado outbreak across North Texas on Tuesday afternoon, I couldn't stop thinking about how many pets were most likely displaced due to down fences and destroyed homes. So with the assistance of my WildfirePetRescue group, we started a Facebook page dedicated to reuniting the lost fur-kids with their families.

In less than twelve hours of being posted, the page had over 1,000 likes and…

Obituary for Cleo the Cat | She inspired the Pet Commando TV Series

Cleopatra, the cat who inspired Louis Pollaro to begin the Pet Commando Reality series last August, was put to rest yesterday.

Louis first noticed a black and white lump of fur on the steps of an office building during last summer's Texas drought. He could see it was a cat, but was certain it was dead.…

Grooming Tip #9 For the Do-It-Youself Type: Peanut Butter

Yes, Peanut Butter... no, I haven't lost my mind!  There are actually several things you can use peanut butter for while grooming your dog to make some things go a little smoother and get you out of a jam.

I have seen many things get into a dog's hair, including tar, glue, gum, stickers, and in one case a whole…

Follow-up on My Rescue Dog Pierson

I just want to share with you how my new dog Pierson is doing. This is the same dog from my blog post in January about the strays living at a park for nearly a month. One dog, the Chow mix has been adopted. I kept the other dog, an Australian Shepherd and/or Border Collie mix, and named him Pierson after the park he had been living in.

Pierson and the Family

Pierson and my Labrador Maya get along fantastically. They…

Marlee and Roxie are sisters who are insperable. They were born under a porch July of 2010, and soon made their way into our home as our precious pets. Company relocation is causing us to have to give up our sweet kitties, and more than anything we want their new home to be a safe, loving one!

I have the transferrable vet information from Stonebrook Vetrinary, regarding shots and each cat being spayed. They still have their back claws, but were declawed on front paws. They are super…

Grooming Tip #8 For the Do-It-Yourself Type: Brushing Dogs that Shed Heavily. (Short Haired Dogs)

As dog owners, most of us have come to expect seeing hair around our houses, on furniture, on curtains, on our clothes, and in places that we can't even imagine how it could possibly even get there!  In most cases, we have come to accept the hair as just a small price to pay for having the love and companionship of…

Help for Finding Pets Forever Homes

There are so many people on PetCommando.com who have had huge hearts, and have taken in lost strays, abandoned, and dumped dogs and cats and are willing to be true Commandos by doing so.  I see many of the postings looking for the owners or trying to find homes for them, and thought I'd make a few suggestions to help to find homes for these pets more quickly.  As a dog groomer for the North Texas/Southern Oklahoma area, I have the potential…

Grooming Tip # 7 For the Do-It-Yourself Type: Ears

As dog owners, we often scratch, rub, and pet our dog's ears or behind them, but far too often, we do not actually look inside them for the potential problems that might be developing there.  There are a large number of problems that can be happening within the dog's ear itself that we need to be aware of before it…

Need Advice on Catching Strays Currently Living at a Park

Most of my Facebook and Twitter friends know that I am looking to adopt another dog. My husband is wanting a Border Collie. When I mentioned this on Facebook, one of my friends got me in touch with a woman who knew of two dogs (one a border collie mix) who have been living at Pierson Park in Kansas City, Kansas for about three weeks now. There are people stopping by to feed them, but none of these people have the means to catch and care for these dogs. And no one wants to call animal control…

Dog Breed to Owner Matches: Akita

The Akita originated in Japan, and was developed as a hunter of large game (including bear), as well as a home guardian.  In Japan, its image is still used to represent good health and long-life, and figurines of them are often given as a gift to newborn children.

     The Akita is a large, double-coated dog…

Service Dog Banned

A small Iowa town has forced a retired Chicago cop and Vietnam veteran to part with the service dog who was helping him cope with a profound stroke that left him with no feeling on the right half of his body.

The dog’s crime? He is a pit-bull mix. It seems Aurelia — a town whose motto is “savor the sweet life” — banned the breed in 2008 after a pit bull bit a meter reader.

He and his wife, Peggy, recently moved to her hometown of 1,100 people to be closer to his ailing…
