Gwennie Pollaro's poisoning from pet food

Since Cleopatra's passing,  Gwennie cat has been very very ill.  At first it was not so noticable but she was getting thinner, spitting up what I thought was hairballs but I noticed blood.  I took her to see Dr. Butler then end of March and all through April and she kept  losing weight with first coccidiosis which he treated...and vomiting blood and bloody diarrhea. It was frightening. She had lost weight like 1 1/2 pounds, then after two weeks he saw her again and she had lost another pound. She was about 4 lbs this past Monday May 7th.

Dr. Butler admitted her and did more bloodwork and IV therapy to get her hydrated again. She left his office after gaining a pound of fluid.  She was so sick she could barely walk... He told me Gwennie had been poisoned and as I don't let her out and my house is baby proofed for the grand babies, I was quite puzzled by this.  I took her home Wednesday and he told me she was in a very guarded state and had both liver and kidney failure/disease. He said she might not make it but we would hope for the best as her age is young only 6-7 years. He gave me prescription food that I had to mix, a tonic to give her twice a day as she was extremely anemic. I stayed home all last week and cared for her.  I had to help her to the cat box...which she missed often (not her style at all) and also had to encourage her to drink and eat.  Anyway...I read today about a rash of animals being poisoned by the very same IAMS cat food I fed her or used to feed her before the illness. It was the IAMS Proactive Heath Indoor Weight and Hairball care.  I had bought a 10 pound bag...8 lbs with extra...from Kroger. Many places have pulled it off the shelves. If you google kidney failure and IAMS and read some of the comments they all say it is the blue bag hairball remedy. Most of the cats died...but not only that, the dogs too. They also mentioned it had a rare form of salmonella in it and was even contracted by people after handling the dry food.  Please check into this at your store... I was told most of these types of food import ingredients from China who does not have any FDA regulations...and the US FDA looks the other way. They have put out a notice that this stuff  as well as many other Procter and Gamble related brands has been recalled on the FDA website.
Gwennie is still not out of the woods...but today she greeted me at the door, is now sitting on my bed with me. She looks better but still fell down from shaky footing during dinner time. I keep telling her "We are gonna get you through this!!" I called IAMS but their offices are closed except between 9-6pm CST which means I will need to call during my lunch hour at work tomorrow. I will also need to let Kroger know. Dr. Butler felt this was what poisoned her and encouraged me to have the packaging near me when I call them. We are hoping they will pay for the extensive vets bills...and there is a class action suit against them now. You might mention this to your friends and other pet lovers. So many may have old bags they are still feeding to their pets.....
I heard from Robert Lucian that Petsmart has pulled this and several other types from their shelves. I just had to share this information. I hope Gwennie pulls through. We do not know quite yet...with a lot of prayer and the wonderful Dr. Dale Butler...I am really hoping she will.

Thank all of you for your condolences and comments...I do appreciate all of your thoughts.

I have been on the phone with IAMS a lady named DENA and learned a few things about IAMS. They say they do not ship ingredients from China. (Maybe not since the last recall). They told me the numbers I gave them were not on recall, yet they are so close to the numbers already recalled I wondered if some of the ingredients might have been added to a second batch. She wants to test my food and is sending a packet  that I will follow instructions so they can test it for MOISTURE. I asked if they tested for salmonella and Melamine and cyanuric acid and other toxins and she said no. I asked her why and she just said they don't tsp for toxins but will test my food. I asked her how she knew for a fact my food didn't hurt Gwennie. She said it was not conclusive because there is no previous blood work to compare with blood work after she became ill. I told her that we had no reason to take blood because she was well. She was nice and sympathetic...but that is their policy. I gave her the previous vets name at Brakebill but he didn't have any reason to take blood either. She goes to the vet every year...but is never sick. I asked her where the food was made and she said the USA but also some types were from New Zealand.  I asked her what if I am the first person to call in about the pet food and she assured me I was being put in a database and should more call, they will be added and then a recall would come. I asked if I would be notified and she said yes.  It makes me feel just helpless because it is so hard to prove. I gave her a blow by blow description of the day she died. I told her she strangely early Sunday morning after I fed her the vet's prescription wet food...walked over to where I used to keep her dry IAMS and started crying for it. I wonder if she was trying to tell me something about the food. She was getting weaker that morning, could not stand long..so she laid down on a blanket and every time I left her she would cry for me. I called the kids and they came by and so did her brother Mr. Gorgeous and said their good byes as she became weaker and more listless. I put some towels under her as she was so worried about the accidents she had and put her in her favorite spot on the couch. Her breathing became labored like a hiccup...then after 45 minutes of that, she stopped breathing, then as I felt her heart it stopped after about 2 minutes. I was thankful to be there to hold her paw and stroke her hair through the whole thing. It was hard for me to believe she was really gone so I left her there for hours before wrapping her and putting her away. We will have a funeral for her. I miss her very much...and IAMS cannot fix this. I do want to applaud and thank Dr. Dale Butler and staff for all the support, and being there for us. They even sent me a sympathy card.   Linda P.

Linda, I am so sorry to hear about Gwennie's passing. You are in my prayers. This makes me so angry that we can't monitor the food we have manufactured in China! You and Gwennie don't deserve this. There is no reason this should have happened.

Could this have caused Cleopatra's illness?  We're rooting for Gwennie to get well!

Comment by Robert Lucian on May 16, 2012 at 5:16pm

I am glad Gwennie is one of the few cats fortunate enough to show signs of getting better, it is not only sad to have a loved family member dangerously ill, but is also very maddening to have it happen as a result of using a brand that is trusted and reputed to be among the best.  Wishing continued improvement for Gwennie, and prayers and thoughts to you both.

Ugh! I am so sorry about Gwennie. it is ridiculous when companies purchase ingredients from other countries in order to reduce the cost of their product.
