No, you don't have to be a videographer like Louis. All you have to do is help an animal in need. Don't turn away and hope someone else does something about it. Do it yourself.

If it is a dog in traffic, be aware of your own safety and be careful not to drive the dog into the street. Also use caution in approaching the dog so that you don't get bitten.

If it is an injured animal, be careful about picking him up. An injured animal may instinctively bite. I keep a leash with me and use it as a muzzle if needed. The leash can also be used to secure a dog and lead him to your vehicle. I also have a blanket with me so that I can move the animal onto the blanket which makes it easier to pick him up.

It would also be helpful if you have water and dog treats with you. Water can be used for an animal that is dehydrated. Dog treats can be used to entice a shy animal. An emergency kit is something you should always have in your car for yourself and your family. But add a few things for dogs too. You shouldn't attempt veterinary treatment but first aid is a good thing to do. I have first-aid a booklet from VSEC which gives a lot of first-aid information for animals. Veterinary clinics in your area may offer a similar first-aid booklet.

It is a good idea to know the numbers of veterinary clinics in your area. Perhaps find some that may be willing to help you out on vet bills if you should bring in a homeless animal. Also know your local animal rescue groups. This will give you a place to take the dog if you are not able to keep him yourself.

These are just a few of my ideas. Feel free to comment if you have more!

Great tips Dawn, would hate anyone to get hurt in trying to rescue an animal. Being a Petcommando doesn't have to mean to take in every animal, foster it, or be the new permanent home for it. Being a Petcommando can be as easy as just not turning a blind eye toward an animal and contacting us or someone about it,,,just the recognition of what is neglected or abandoned is the start of giving a deserving and loving pet a new home that it so badly needs and deserves.

These are some great tips. I learned when we were rescuing the Blue Heeler the other day that its better to reach out to a dog with your palm open from below. If you try to pet it with your palm down (over it's head) the dog may think you are going to hit it, or you may startle it. A leash is a must.
