Most of my Facebook and Twitter friends know that I am looking to adopt another dog. My husband is wanting a Border Collie. When I mentioned this on Facebook, one of my friends got me in touch with a woman who knew of two dogs (one a border collie mix) who have been living at Pierson Park in Kansas City, Kansas for about three weeks now. There are people stopping by to feed them, but none of these people have the means to catch and care for these dogs. And no one wants to call animal control because the animal shelter in that area is a high kill shelter. The woman I got in contact with has 10 dogs of her own so she can't take them in either.
Well, when I heard about this situation, me and my husband drove the 45 minutes to this park to check it out. And sure enough, here were these two young dogs right there in the children's play area lounging around. They both came when I called and let me give them some love, but the moment I pulled out the leash, they shied away. I called the woman who told me about it and she and her husband came out to help. But between the four of us and some pretty darned good treats, the dogs seemed to know what we were up to and stayed away. We tried for a good two hours before I gave up. The woman stayed out a bit longer. I told her to call me if she caught any one of them but since she hasn't called me I am going to assume she has not caught them yet.
I really need your advise. How can I sneak a leash around these two dogs? I've tried hiding hit on my wrist and hoping I can slip it around their head when I pet them but they somehow know I have the leash and won't come to me. And although we have some good treats, there are people coming by regular to feed these dogs so they are not starving enough get a treat when we have a leash in our hands. We had them cornered at one time but no one wants to get bit so they slipped outside of our circle.
I want to try to catch them again tomorrow and before a winter storm kicks in. Thanks for your help! :0)

Comment by Dawn Ross on January 13, 2012 at 1:04pm The lab mix is being taken care of by someone else. They will not keep him but they will try to find him a home. I will no more this weekend.
I have to go pick Pierson up from the vet so I don't have time to uploat pictures yet. I will try to do that this weekend. Pierson got a bloody nose yesterday for some unknown reason so I rushed him to the emergency animal hospital. He is fine today but they still don't know what is wrong. They are running more tests, but in the meantime I want to get him home.
Comment by Louis Pollaro on January 13, 2012 at 12:48pm That is terrific, Dawn! You have a new dog and that was a true rescue. Pierson is very lucky to have found you. Funny that you had to pick him up and carry him. That happened with one of the dogs we rescued at first. What did you do with the Lab mix from the park? Please upload some photos of these guys!
Comment by Dawn Ross on January 10, 2012 at 5:11pm Great news! I caught the border collie mix today. Both dogs are now officially rescued. Since my husband and I were wanting to get another dog (after Sephi passed away this past November) we decided to keep the border collie mix. In fact, it is because we wanted a border collie that we found out about this one abandoned at the park.
This past weekend I had posted on Facebook asking about border collies. My husband wanted an intelligent loyal dog and so we have been looking at various rescue groups. One of my Facebook friends sent me a message saying that she new a woman who has been trying to catch these two stray dogs at Pierson Park for some time. She gave me her number to call her and so I did. I have been trying since Sunday to catch them. As you know, I caught the Chow mix yesterday and got help catching the border collie mix today.
I am naming the border collie mix Pierson, after the park he has been living in for at least three weeks.
(BTW, he still won't walk on a leash. Someone who has been feeding the dogs helped me catch the border collie mix. He called him to my car, then picked him up and put him in. When I got him home, I introduced him to my Lab, Maya. Then took him to get a flea/tick bath, then took him to the vet. Pierson did very well with all those things, except I had to pick him up and carry him everywhere because he wouldn't do the leash)

Comment by Dawn Ross on January 9, 2012 at 4:13pm Good news! I caught one of the dogs. I hung around since about 9:30am, made friends and a couple failed attempts. But on the third attempt, I caught the lab mix. I called someone to help me since I still couldn't get him in the car. She helped then we hung around a bit trying to get the other dog to come back. But he was scared and wouldn't come near again. I gave up at about 1:30pm. Me and my friend have agreed to meed at the park again tomorrow at noon to give it another try. His memory of us catching his friend will have had time to pass and he will be very lonely tonight so maybe tomorrow he will trust enough to get close again.
Thanks for the advice!!!!
The first thing that I thought of, when I read this, was Robert and his uncanny method of catching the dog in "Think Like an Animal". I do have another thought though, and that is to make friends with the dogs, Nothing in your hands, leash in the car, and after you have petted them a reasonable amount of time, then, bring in the leash.(it might take a couple of hours but it would be worth it since there is a storm coming)
Comment by Louis Pollaro on January 9, 2012 at 3:02pm Did you see our Pet Commando Robert in action when we caught the blue heeler in Pet Commando episode 4 "Think Like and Animal"? This dog was hungry, unlike the dog you are trying to catch, but you might want to watch how he slipped the leash over the dog's head after about 1/2 hour of hanging around, making friends with it, and feeding it from his hand.
Robert waited until just the right moment and slipped the leash over the dogs head before the dog even knew. Robert is a horse whisperer as well as a dog whisperer. I'll send see what he has to add. Anyone else have any tips?
